In the aftermath of Southampton’s humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester, things looked extremely bleak.
Would the club be relegated? Would Ralph Hasenhuttl be sacked? Where do we go from here?
Presumably, all of these things would’ve been whirling around the St Mary’s faithful’s minds.
However, one decision from Hasenhuttl in the wake of such a monumental defeat showed where his priorities are.
The Telegraph reveal that the former RB Leipzig boss decided to put his own contract discussions on ice in order to focus on stabilising the Saints and ensuring that their campaign did not fall into the abyss.
Now, this is an admirable stance and proves that he is a truly selfless manager, and one who would prefer to put the club first before himself.
It would’ve been very easy for him to feel under pressure following that defeat and look to put pen to paper as soon as possible in fear of potentially being sacked – safeguarding his future in the process – but he remained calm and took the stance of the club comes first.
It is somewhat refreshing to see such a bold and selfless outlook be rewarded with a hot streak of form which has seen Southampton win five and draw one of their last eight Premier League games – they now sit six points off sixth-placed Tottenham with Europe in sight rather than the Championship.
After The Telegraph revealed how he wanted his contract talks to take a back seat, Hasenhuttl’s priorities have become clear.
Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
He is a manager who seemingly cares deeply about the side he is in charge of, and would happily sacrifice the security of his future in preference of ironing out the issues amongst his team first.
Southampton are lucky to have him, and the Austrian is getting his rewards for such an honest decision.
In other news, this Southampton target showed why Hasenhuttl should go back in for him this summer…
