Tottenham Hotspur’s season has quickly gone downhill since the turn of the year, and it’s only going to get worse before it gets any better.
The north Londoners are out of all cup competitions and have sunk to seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League, meaning there’s a genuine chance that there will be no Champions League football at their flashy stadium come next term.
A hard pill to swallow for most at the club, you’d imagine, having been runners-up in the tournament back in June 2019.
Supporters at Spurs are growing increasingly concerned at the lack of progress on the pitch, something that should have coincided with them departing White Hart Lane for pastures new.
Each time there’s a transfer rumour or report, fans are quick to jump the gun and take fire at the likes of Daniel Levy and the ENIC Group – as seen here over Philippe Coutinho, and here on the future of Harry Kane.
So with that in mind, have they done all they can to progress Spurs onto a new level? Is it time they sold the club or found new investment?
Our writers have run the mill over the matter below, read on…
Harry Sherlock
“There won’t ever be a better time for ENIC to sell up. Spurs have a new stadium, all the facilities in the world, perhaps the most recognisable manager in world football in Jose Mourinho, and some genuinely world-class players: Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, and Dele Alli.
“And it would spark a genuine outpouring of joy from the club’s fans who have watched on and waited, wistfully, for another trophy to come their way. T
“he best manager Spurs have ever had took them so very close – they could have won the Premier League twice, as well as the Champions League – but he was never properly backed by ENIC – they betrayed Pochettino.
“His exit, coupled with the dramatic downturn in form this season, has sharpened the focus on ENIC’s investment or lack thereof.
“It is often said that Spurs were one or two players away from toppling either Leicester City or Chelsea but they never arrived. Now, we’re seeing the moss and the ruin envelop the castle that Pochettino built.
“For that alone, ENIC need to leave this club well alone and sell up, preferably to someone who puts glory over profit, and not the other way around.”

“It may not be popular, but ENIC may be well placed to stay put – for at least the time being.
“After all the time and money spent into creating one of world football’s greatest stadiums, it would be slightly bizarre for them to make the decision to leave so soon after. They haven’t seen the fruits of their labour just yet, and it would no doubt be appealing to them to stick around and finally be there if and when Spurs do clinch their first major piece of silverware in a while.
“What can’t be said enough, however, is that they simply must support Mourinho in the transfer market. A big fancy stadium with no tangible success for it isn’t the marker of a big side – the Lilywhites only have to look across north London to see that. ENIC will have blood on their hands were they not to provide Mourinho with some big money this summer, and allow the Portuguese man to strengthen their ailing squad.”

“Why would ENIC sell up now just four months after appointing Jose Mourinho as Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager?
“Things may not be going to play under the Portuguese right now – and in general this season – but the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss deserves a summer transfer window to really stamp his mark on this side.
“His trophy-winning record during his managerial career suggests that, in time, he can bring some much-needed silverware to north London. In that respect, why would they leave now?
“Obviously, if things go pear-shaped under Mourinho than their position at the club could be untenable, but until then they have every right to ignore the haters and stay.”
Lewis Blain
“The ENIC Group may have brought north London a fancy new stadium and considerable advancements off the pitch, but they are merely hindering their prospects on it through a lack of investment and faith in the playing squad.
“It’s quite bizarre and unbelievable to see a team that were Champions League runners-up merely nine months ago become a shadow struggling to gain qualification back to that very competition next season.
“And that can only fall back on those in charge. They sacked Pochettino despite not backing him financially – now look at them. Seven points from the top four, no cups to play for. It’s all a bit disastrous. But at least they have a big new stadium, hey?
“If ENIC do not want to take strides in edging closer to silverware, then they are better off finding someone who is or at least, trying to source further finances so that Mourinho can bring that elusive trophy back to Tottenham’s grasp.”
