Former Sunderland man Stephen Elliott has taken to social media to hit out at the club following their 2-1 defeat to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening.
The Lowdown: No manager, another defeat
The Black Cats were once again led by interim manager Mike Dodds following a defeat to basement side Doncaster Rovers on the weekend, with no full-time replacement for Lee Johnson finalised.
It started promisingly against The Robins after Alex Pritchard put the visitors in front, however, goals in the second half from Elliot Bonds and Alfie May ensured Sunderland suffered a third straight defeat.
That has left the club in fourth place, two points off Wigan in second, who still have four games in hand over Sunderland.
The Latest: Elliott’s comments
Elliott took to Twitter on Tuesday evening following the club’s defeat down south. The 38-year-old said there is ‘something seriously wrong’ at the football club and labelled sacking Johnson without a replacement lined up was ‘mad’.
“Who is making decisions at the football club? There’s something seriously wrong. I’m not saying LJ should have definitely stayed on (some poor results) but getting rid of him without an immediate replacement was mad. No leadership anywhere at this club. Another lowest low.”
The Verdict: New boss needed
Sunderland can’t afford to drag the process of finding a new manager on any longer, with Roy Keane seemingly the club’s top target.
Failing to finalise a move for Keane, or another candidate, prior to Saturday will only run the risk of more dropped points away at AFC Wimbledon, whereas they may actually reap the rewards of a new manager bounce if they get something sorted.
The Black Cats still have four league fixtures before the month is out, the last of which is against Wigan, so the sooner a new boss comes in, the better.
